power.

The opinion of the Party leaders are given after the state of the poll was known last night.

Six new women have been returned, making twelve in all.

The late editions of the morning papers of all parties agree in giving a warning that yesterday's – re- aults, which were mostly in the in- dustrial constituencies. In no way can necessarily be regarded as a safe indication of the tendency throughout the whole country.

Vanishing Tory Majorities The principal feature of the first day's polling, apart from the Con- servative losses, is that the Conser- vative majorities tumbled down by thousands in nearly every seat. A comparison between the figures of the elections in 1924 and 1929 for constituencies already covered is striking. The Conservatives in 1924 had 130 and in 1929 77, whilst Labour had 65 in 1924 and 120 in 1929.

Labour Gain Notte South The declaration of the polls opened to-day with a Labour gain in Nottingham South after a three cornered fight, while the Conserva- tives retained Nottingham Central by a majority of 2,998 compared with 8,255 at the fast election..
