The motoring com- munity almost seems to adopt the attitude that the tyre manufactur- er in reiterating advice as to in- flation pressure is in some way making an excuse for his pro- ducts. When one examines the question closely, it is evident that the tyre manufacturer must, in season and out of season, preach inflation the doctrine of correct

pressure. Once his products get into the hands of the user, the potential mileage built into them ean quite easily be reduced to a figure which suggests to the no- thinking motorist that the tyre construction is weat or faulty. Everything is in the user's hands, and it is very wall worth while paying the necessary attention to the Inflation question, because correctly inflated tyres do have a proper chance of rendering the mileage built into them by their makers.
Test Pressures There are certain specific forms of tyre failure which are almost wholly attributable to neglect of the inflation pressure question. These types of failure can be avoided if only the motorist will make a firm rule to test his tyre pressures frequently and regular- ly. Once a week-should-be-suff cient in the ordinary way, and a prominent maker of inflation pres- sure gauges has adopted the slogan:-
"Test your tyres every. Friday." This is an admirable slogan and if the advice it gives was adopt- ed by every motorist there would be far greater general satisfac- tion experienced with pacumatic tyre service. In connection with pressure testing it is important to remember that it is quite impos. sible to tell whether a kyrė is ́under-inflated by its appearance. It is essential that a gauge is applied to the valve.
Incorrect. Inflation
Coming to the disastrous effects of incorrect inflation, it has been proved that the "casing" (which ja the very heart of a pneumatic tyre) quickly becomes fatigued when there is excessive, bending of the cord material on the should- er. This excessive bending must always occur when there is Jack of adequate air pressure and in time the "casing" will tend to break up at the point of flexing and the "plies of material will separate one from another.
