"I WILL BREAK YOU SOCIALLY AND POLITICALLY”
"WRONG MAN" PLEA
Bertha St. Clair Mason, aged 48, Winchendon-road, accountant, of
Fulham, S.W., pleaded not guilty at the Old Bailey to uttering a letter demanding money with menaces from Mr. Philip Snowden, M.P., Chancellor of the Exchequer in the last Socialist Government.
Mr. Roome, prosecuting said that the offence was known in popu- lar language as blackmall. In some cases there was some founds- tion for a blackmailing claim, but there was no vestige of foundation for the charges Mason had made against Mr. Snowden.
"She admitted that she has made a complete mistake in the identity of Mr. Snowden and that she has written these blackmailing letters to him thinking he was whom she accused of having seduced her twenty years ago,”.

In her first letter to Mr. Snowden she wrote:
You will remember our brief acquaintance of many years ago and that I have never encroached upon the fact.

If you don't write or come to see me about the business part of my letters I shall duly ac- Snowden with the quaint Mrs. full facts of the case and ask her help, and moreover, if you now goad me too far, I shall see that: all the principal members of tho House. namely, the Prime Minister, the Speaker, the Chan- cellor, the Home Secretary and Lady Astor-for a very special reason shall be informed why. I' don't consider you are a fit mem- ber to hold office under his Majesty's Government.
However long it takes I will! break you polistetily and socially. In а subsequent letter dated February 17, Mason wrote:
I cannot starve and see my children starve without a fight, and you might be able to raise a subscription for me among your} friends once you grasp and! glimpse the tragedy.
Home Secretary Told Mr. Roome said that Mr. Snow-1 den showed the letter to the Home Secretary, and it was sent to Scot, land Yard.
Detective Inspector Askew visited Mason, and she then said that there was no mistake, as there was only vne Showder in the Ilouse and only

Request for £100
Mr. Snowden fnored the letter, and Mrs. Mason then wrote:
Dear Phil--How very gallant you are at keeping your promises out of the past. I fancy if you will ask your lawyer to drop me a line, he will be willing to arrange a £100 loan for me, which I need for a business partnership. You for the can have 15

"Mr. Snowden
is in fact lame, and has lo use crutches, and it would appear cleac that he was the person she intended to write to," said Mr. Rooms.

The next letter read:
Are you afraid that you have struck an enemy out of the past? If so, you are greatly mistaken..said It is really to your advantage to come and see me, since I have a very shrewd idea that your brain is capable of evolving big things in a certain direction that would place thousands of pounds to your credit by some alight colla- boration on my part, instead of hundreds all told your journalis- tic pen now brings you in. I am too essentially a good business wontan to countenace anything that savours of black- mail, so there is no ocasion for any undue anxiety on your part. The letter which was the subject of the charge stated:
Your attitude of silence in re- gard to my letters is neither clever nor becoming, but merely convinces me you have a cowardly conscience.

Mr. Justice Hawke, in sentencing“ Mason to 18 months' imprisonment in the second division, said:
No one knows whether anyone. masqueraded as Mr. Snowden, ori whether it was a pure invention If on your part to get money. I were satisfied that the latter was the truth, I should deal with you a great deal more severely.
I accept the plea that at some time somebody took the oppor- tunity of getting on terms. of intimacy with you by pretending, contrary to the truth, that he was a person then aproaching political eminence. It is a happy thing! that Mr. Suowden had the courage and public spirit to come forward as he has done and hand these documents to the Home Secretary. It is not everybody who would have that courage, but he is a man who had no fear of scandal.
