SCHOOL SPORTS

ANNUAL GATHERING AT CHEUNG CHAU VISITORS FROM HONG KONG

Cheung Chau, Monday. On Saturday last the seventh annual sports meeting of the local Government School was held on the C.C.R. Association, ground, which was gaily decorated with flags and festoons of flowers. A floral arch marked the en-

trance to the steps leading down to the ground which presented an animated scene. In spite of the leaden skies the day was ideal from the competitors' point of view, and the fates were kind as the rain held off.

The Road men are now on the joh getting the paths in good shape.

Among the visitors present were Mr. and Mrs. Greensmith, Mr. G. E. Wetton, Inspector Langley, and Mr. A. MacKenzie.

Several schools were represent- ed. Conspicuous among these! were the small boys from the Kai Fong School in their new uniform of dark blue, at the end of the programme these boys marched round the ground with their ban- ners flying and a band of Drums and bugles. The Tuen Yee school girls dressed in white also took part with songs and drill.

An Array of Silver There was quite an array of silver cups and other articles of

use and ornament set out on the table from which they were dis- tributed later to the prize win- ners. The matshed shelter for the visitors was dispensed with this year but refreshments were provided as usual.

All the events were keenly con- tested and the hard-working Com- mittee are to be congratulated on the

attending their efforts as no accident or dispute marred the day.

The hill race, tug-of-war, team, flag race and the inter-school con- tests excited keen interest and en- thusiasm as usual.

Late in the afternoon when most of the events had been con- tested a deputation went to the wharf to meet the Stanley which was expected to bring Mr. and Mrs. Southorn, Mr. E. Ralphs and others.

Speech of Welcome On the arrival of the party at the sports ground the final events; were run off. The head master, Mr. Hon Kau-fung, gave a speech of welcome to the visitors and the part sports should play in school life urging parents to im- press on their boys the need of physical exercise.. He also thank- ed the donors of the handsome prizes, expressing great regret that Mrs. Southorn was unable to be

present but that Mr.i Alabaster had kindly consented to distribute the prizes. Before ' doing so he also expressed regret i that owing to a slight accident Mrs. Southern was unable to be present but that he would do his best to act as her deputy, He thanked the Committee for the honour. It was the seventh occa- sion on which he had attended the Cheung Chau Sports and he congratulate the boys on having a cool day for their races.

The speech was then translated into Chinese by one

of the masters, followed by cheers from the students and visitors.

The head master called out the names of the events and the names of those taking first and second places; in some cases the contestants had tied and received equal prizes.

Mrs. Southorn's Regrets The Director of Education, Mr. E. Ralphs said he had a personal message from Mrs. Southorn saying how greatly she regretted being unable to attend the meet- ing but hoped to be there next

year.

He thanked Mr. Alabaster for stepping into the breach and said it

Cheers were called for and heartily given for Mr. Alabaster, Mr. Ralphs, the ladies, the head master, and Sports Committee.

Mr. and Mrs. Southorn had pre- sented a cup to be competed for year by year, also prizes to be re- tained by the winners each year.

Nome Hero, Derby Winner

Leonhard Segella, hero of the famous race to Nome, is congratulated o winning the Seventh Eastern International Dog Sled Derby at Quebec. He covered 123 miles in eleven hours, six and a half minutes with his sturdy team of Siberian muskies.

Dog sted derby records were broken and new ones established during the three days of the race. Dupuis, who finished recond, made a world's record when he completed the first lap of 13 min 3 hours, 22 minutes, 42 seconds. Of the nine who finished the crea laps, only two took as long as the first Derby winner at Quebec in 1923, demons-« trating that hardier and speedier dogs have been developed for sled work since then.
