SHIPS BEING BUILT NOT TO BE INTERFERED WITH

GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE

London. Yesterday.

In the House of Commons, at: question time, Comdr. Kenworthy Auggested that in view of Mr. Gibson's proposals at Geneva the Government retard their pro- gramme of warship construction.

Mr. W. C. Bridgeman (First Lord of the Admiralty) said that work on ships being built would proceed, but pointed out that it was not propos- ed to lay down ships under the 1929 programme till towards the end of the financial year. He was of opin- ion that it would be premature to delay further expenditure before they knew exactly what the pro- posals are, because premature action would not only not im- prove chances of agreement but would disturb the work at the dock-1 yards.

A Different Excuse? Mr. Strellett was proceeding to submit to the witness that in a statement he had made previously in the summary of evidence he had given a different excuse for non- production of his receipts, when the Judge Advocate objected to counsel making reference to the summary of evidence before he had arst got from the witness a denial of gay statement made in the summary.

Mr. Strellett replied that he was merely trying to show the difference in the witness's statements, but be did not press his point.

Replying to the Judge Advocate who questioned him with a view to clearing up this point, the witness said that he did not leave Hòng Kong during 1928. He had changed house in 1928, however. He always kept his receipts at his house and when he moved he was sure that he had taken these receipts with him to the new house. When he came to look for them in the new house, however, he could not find them.

The case is proceeding.
