FORGED CHITS

A STREET CHASE

On Saturday а coolie was charged before Mr. E. W. Hamilton, at the Central Magis- tracy, with attempting to obtain $30 from Messrs. Mackinnon, Mackenzie and Co., by means of two forged chits purporting to, have been signed by Mr. R. A. C. Thip. Second Officer of the B.I. 8. Tilawa," and with uttering documents knowing them to have been forged.

Accused was alleged to have presented the chits to Mr. W. G. L. Dunbar, an assistant in the firm, of Friday morning last,) to be initialled by the latter, for payment for services supposed to have been-rendered in the remov- ing of ashes from the Tilawa" by sampan Mr. Dunbar suspected the genuineness of the chits and accordingly handed the coolle over to the custody of a watchman whilst he communicated with the Folice.

Whilst in the custody of the watchman the accused broke loose and dashed into the street but was recaptured after a brisk chase in Queen's-road Central.

Yesterday Mr. Philp denied having signed the two chits in question, and after comparing them with genuine ones, his Wor- ship was satisfied that they were, forged and convicted accused. "

A previous conviction for steal- ing in 1922 having been proved, accused was sentenced to six months hard labour on each of the two charges, the sentences to riin concurrently.

AT THE PENINSULA HOTEL LAST NIGHT

There was again a large and appreciative audience at -the Peninsula Hotel last night when a capital concert was given by the Band of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, under the baton of Mr. W. H- Fitz-Earle, AR.CM

The programme was both pleas ing and varied, and those who were present expressed the opin- ion that such a musical treat is only too infrequent.
