SHIPBUILDING

LORD KYLSANT'S SPLENDID

·

PRAISE FOR THE PRINCE

THE CHINA MAIL,

Lord Kylsant in reply to the toast of The Shipbuilding and Engineering Industries, coupled with the name of the Institute of Marine Engineers," said “We have listened with the deep- est interest to what your Royal High- ness has said about the great indus- try with which, in one way or an- other, all of us are closely connect- ed. We keenly appreciats the mas terful way in which you, Siz, have dealt with many of the problem's which confront us to-day. Your Royal Highness has always shown a very real and practical concern for all phases of the work the British people are doing throughout the world, and British industry, trade and commerce are under a great 'debt'of gratitude for your outspoken”utter- ances on many fundamental, questions affecting our national interests.

Whilst shipbuilding Has been pasa- a very difficult period, ing through and several great shipbuilding com- panies have had to write millions sterling off their capital, ;I hope

and believe that the general trade of the country is gradually re- viving, and that the outlook for ship- building is steadily Improving al though the trade revival is slow, and the percentage of unemployed ship yard workers is still andaly high. (Hear, hear.) I am pleased to say that there are distinct signs that the shipbuilding industry ja. becoming more active. The gross tonnage of vessels launched In Great Britain during 1928 (viz., over 1,144,000 tons) was greater than in any year since 1921. The amount of cew tonnage commenced during 1028 was 1,300,000 rons, compared with over 1,750,000 tons in 1927, but it must be remen- bered that the latter figure was ab- normal, owing to the areamulation of arrears due to the coal stoppage. The Largest Ship We live in an era of transition, and perhaps, in no 'sphera has change been so rapid and far-reaching than in re-

for having given us not only the op- portunity for necessary re-organisa- tion, but the stimulas to fresh inven- tiveness and ingenuit to cope with the exacting requirements of modern conditions:

I have referred briefly both to the shipbuilding and engineering indus- tries, but, as a British shipowner, I would like to say how much we are indebted to marine engineers for the painstaking and valuable work they do for British shipping, both afloat and ashore, and, #past-president of the Institute of Marine Engineers. to express to your Royal Highness, on their behalf, our deep sense of appreciation of your Royal Highness' presence, at this banquet, and of the toast to which I feel I have far too: inadequately replied.
