HONG KONG,

NEW LIFE BOAT FOR CHANNEL

TO ASSIST 'PLANES

WILL HAVE ENGINES OF 375 H.P.

STATIONED AT DOVER

London, Yesterday.

A new type of fast motor lifeboat, capable of a speed of 17 or 18 knots for use in the English Channel, is announced by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The lifeboat will cost between £17,000 and £18,000 and will be stationed at Dover.

The object of the Institution is to provide a lifesaving vessel fast enough to go to the assistance of any aeroplane forced down in the Clannel.

The new boat will be 64 feet by 14 feet. She will have two cabins with room for about 50 people. Whereas the most powerful lifeboats at present have two 80 horse-power engines this new type will have two engines of 375 horsepower each.

She will also be fitted with wire- less telephony enabling her to take and send messages over a distance of 50 miles.

Four shipping companies have responded to the appeal made by the Prince of Wales, in his presidential address at the last annual meeting of the Institution, that they should provide lifeboats.--British Wireless Service.

An Official Report

The Air Ministry have received an official report that the Koyal Air Force Fairey monoplane, which is attempting to fly non-stop to India, passed over Bagdad at 1.50 this afternoon, British summer time.

When the monoplane passed over Bagdad she had been in the air about 27 hours and had covered 2,600 miles. She was within an hour of the time forecasted for her. She had accomplished half ber task and overcome most of the difficult and unpleasant section of the jour-A ney.

Climbs 10,000 Feet at Night

In the night she had had to climb

to 10,000 feet to cross the Taurus mountains and now, with tanke emptied of nearly 500 gallons of petrol and no further need to fly really high to surmount the high land, she should travel faster than she has been able to on the first half of her flight.

"With Luck"

It is anticipated, at the Air Min- Istry that, with luck, she should pass over Karachi early to-morrow morn. ing and then make for Bangalore. If all goes well, she should be down at Bangalore early to-morrow after- noon, after flying another 2,500 miles from Bagdad-British Wire- less Service.
