MODERN MARKET?

MR. BRAGA'S SUGGESTION
NO MEASLES
MEDICAL EXAMINATION OF CHINESE CHILDREN?
OFFICIAL STATEMENT
That the Colony was free from
The question arose yesterday measles was the statement made at the fortnightly meeting of the by the Medical Officer of Health, Sanitary Board as to the finding Dr. H. A. Fawcett, at the fort-of a substitute for the old wooden nightly meeting of the Sanitary chopping block used by stall- Board yesterday in reply to ques-holders in the markets. The Hon. tions from Mr. Wong Kwong-tin. Mr. J. P. Braga suggested that Pursuant to notice, Mr. Wong enamelled metal or some form of Kwong-tin asked:-
glass might be used for chopping blocks for meat, etc.
Will the Medical Officer of Health kindly inform the Board if any case of measles has been reported? If so, in what locality; and what precautions have been taken to prevent its spreading?
from
The suggestion was made in connection with the proposed plan for a small market at Kowloon Tong for which a sum of $1,500 was provided, Mr. Braga said that in his opinion that sum was insufficient; he thought that more liberal provision should be made. He also advocated discarding the wooden blocks for chopping meat and suggested that a substitute might be found.
Mr. W. J. Carrie, President of the Board, pointed out that if a market were more elaborate wanted, the matter would have to be postponed, so that they could ask for a larger sum of money. He was also of the opinion that the amount set aside was inade- quate.
The M.O.H.: I am informed of none this year and only one death indirectly due to this disease has been returned. But measles is not an officially notifiable disease. The death this year was a Japan- ese infant from Praya East, No. 2 Health District, early this month. The Medical Officer in the Edu- cation Department states: "No cases notified to me this year. There is a report of two cases the University quarters." No cases were reported to her offi. cially last year but she states that notifications from British
Mr. Braga suggested that a re- schools only are received.

The matter was tible. Unfortunately very few accordingly postponed.
Besides the President Chinese children under 11 years. J. Carrie) those present at the of age are medically examined.
Mr. Wong Kwong-tin: Does he consider that an epidemic of measles exists and that extra precautions be taken by parents and particularly in schools to pre vent its infection?
The M.O.H.: From the limited information available the answer to the first part of the question is the negative.
As to the second part, this ques- tion does not arise and in any
case
is dwarfed by far more urgent and serious causes of child mortality. I do not anticipate an epidemic here.
Mr. Wong Kwong-tin: Will the Medical Officer of Ilealth kindly advise what steps ought to be taken, should such epidemic arise?
The M.O.IL: In reply to the third question this is too wide a subject to lay down in detail and depends largely on circumstances. Certain general principles apply. The chief of these, in my opinion,
(Mr.
meeting were Dr. S. C. Ho, Mr. Wong Kwong-tin, the Hon. Mr. H T. Creasy. C.B.E.. the Hon. Mr. J. P. Braga, Dr. W. V. M. Koch, the Hon. Mr. R. A. C. North (Secretary for Chinese Affairs), Dr. H. A Fawcett (M.O.H.), and Mr. J. Watson (Secretary).
