FOOTBALL SHIELD. SEMI-FINALS

SATURDAY'S TIES

WILL PORTUGUESE TRIUMPH

OVER KOWLOON ?

PROSPECTS WEIGHED UP

[By "Rover"]

With the end of the season rapidly approaching and the League matches practically com- pleted interest to-morrow centres

League and Shield at this stage in the Football Season is "good go- ing."

Both Clubs will be at full strength. I am inclined to think that if the joss is even, the Chin- ese will enter the final, but this is a Cup tie. "Verb sap.!.

The Junior Shield matches are interesting and will act as curtain raisers for the senior matches.

The Royal Hone Kong Golf Club notifies the following start- ing times, for Sunday:

Chinese Athletic as on former oe- casions, although both matches should be keen.

Junior League In addition to the above there are three Junior League matches as follows:

Somersete v. Eastern, Chatham-

road; referee, Mr. Sany. Kowloon v. Small Units, Kowloon

F.C.; referee, Mr. Mose. R.A. Club de Recreio, Caroline

Hill; referee, Mr. Swallows. The Shield, the blue riband of local "soccer" is the big event. The four Clubs engaged in the senior competition comprise two Kowloon Clubs and two Hong Kong, Clubs, one of each will ob- viously be in the final so that we have an interesting final in store, with Kowloon as usual figuring in the final stages.

*

*

Kowloon, last year's champions, have this season again demon- strated that they are good Shield fighters. After struggling hard all the season with players gradual- ly slipping away, to have "struck the course" again to get into the semi-final after a rather thin League season, is to the credit of the Club, who will make a good fight to retain the "Shield" which has rested so often at the Club premises in recent years.

*

In the "Recreio." Kowloon have worthy opponents. Coming fresh from their big Interport victory at Shanghai, the Recreit will

05

make Kowloon go the whole way. The Recreio at full strength, which they Eure at pre sent, arc good enough to win the Shield, and dour Shield fighters as McKelvie's lads are. I am inclined to think "Gosano" and his lively team will check Kowloon's remarkable run of Shield successes, and enter the final. At should be a great match, hard going all the time, and with very little between the teams at the-finish.

The other semi-final at the Club ground is also a big match. Al though the R.A. have not done too well in the League, the post- tion of Portsmouth in the Eng lish Cup and English League at present is an indication of the un- reliability of League form as ap- plied to knock-out competitions.

The R.A. are a good solid side although on the slow side, and in a game of contrasting styles, we ought to see a real good match.

*

*

i

The Second Division League matches, with the leading Clubs all engaged in the Shield, are not of much interest. The Somersets, Kowloon, and the R A. should all improve their positions.

The Police are soon to lose a sturdy ha'f-back in Mr. A. E. Brittain, who will be leaving the Colony to-morrow on the s.s. "Naldera"

on a short ho'iday. Ho has always been a tower of strength at smashing up attacks on the Police goal, and has in- variably played a sound defensive game, Mr. Brittain, it will be remembered, went up to Shanghai a few seasons ago, as a reserve in the Hong Kong Interport eleven; although he did not play in the big game, he turned out against the United Services, and gave a creditable display.

Chinese Ath'etic Defeat the R.A.

Chinese Athletic by a victory over the Royal Artillery have drawn level with the Somerset Lat the top of the League table.

Both teams have yet a

match to play, the Somersets against South China (also in the running for the Championship) and the Athletic versus the Hong Kong Football Club.

Yesterday's games in both divisions of the Hong Kong League resulted as under:-

Division I

Chinese Athletic 1; R.A. 0.

Division I R.A. 4; Athletic 0. With a ground that did not suit well, either team particularly Chinese Athletic defeated the Royal Artillery in a scrappy game by a goal to nil. The winners played the better football, but it was not until well on the second half that Suen Kum-shun netted for them. Fouls were frequent and an incident occurred early in play which resulted in one of the soldiers being ordered off the field.

This goal was under dispute, but the League officials decided that it should stand. The reason

It might be mentioned that the Glenealy Gladiators whose ground, in spite of it being uphill, is the best at the disposal of the League and all teams have shown a partiality for playing their matches on this ground.

One drawback, however, is that the Gladiators hold this ground jointly with the Beggars' Brigade, who use it as a camping ground, the B.B., are keen to hold their annual camp before the really hot weather sets it, and are already grousing that the long drawn out Shield competition had delayed their camp this year.

Undoubtedly, Glenealy is the shortest route to Caine-road and levels "more high," but all the same the League officials consider that these kill sports should de- tour via Garden-road.

The match was very interest- ing. In the first half the Cock- spurs scored 16 goals to their op ponents' 9, and they looked like easy winners, but when players were counted it was found that the Whizz-bangs were at a dis- advantage, having 29 players to their opponents' 34.
