THE INTERNATIONA, SYNDICATE

45 WITNESSES

DOS CALDOS AND HIS EMPLOYEES

THE CHINA

THE PHILLIPINE-CHINA CO.

J. Dos Caldos, described as the assistant manager of the Phil- lipine-China Trading Co., was brought before Mr. T. S. Whyte Smith, at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday on remand. The charges against him are that he had on various dates engaged in all 45 persons to work for him, and that from each one of them he had received $50 by way of deposit.

Mr. L. R. Andrewas, Assistant Crown Solicitor, is conducting the case for the prosecution.

At the previous hearing accus- ed was represented by Mr. Leo d'Almada, but when the case was resumed yesterday. his Worship announced that he had received a telephonic

from message

Mr. that he had d'Almada who said withdrawn from the case.

Accused replied that he knew all about it. Mr. d'Almada had seen him in the jail and as he had not sufficient funds to pay for legal expenses, the solicitor had told him that "Mr. d'Almada la not a charitable institution."

A Girl's Evidence

Evidence was then given by a girl employed in the Kam Hing Knitting Factory. She spoke of handing accused $50 on March 5 as deposit for a job. The store was empty at the time, and after having signed a contract, she was told she could not start work, until she was in possession of a long gown. Accused also, promised to make the gown for her and in this way kept her waiting until March 25, when she found the premises closed.

His Worship asked Mr. Andrewes if it was necessary to call all the 46 witnesses.

Mr. Andrewes replied that in his own opinion and from the in- structions he had received, he thought that it would be advisable to hear all the witnesses. If only a few were called, accused might say that his business justified him in engaging them, but in, calling them all, the Crown could prove conclusively that the business was not large enough to justify the employment of such a huge staff. Further hearings of the case were fixed for April 19, 23, 24, and

The

been undergrowth has thoroughly searched by the police, but without success. They think that the note may be the work of a practical joker.

The European wine dealers in the Colony were bolding a meeting to discuss the matter and E was probable it would be brought to the notice of the Legislative Council. If wine dealers were required to respect the regulation, then it would be detrimental to their business and might possibly result in their be- ing unable to carry on at all.

In imposing a fine of $10, the Magistrate said the regulation existed and must be respected.
