was restored. Nevertheless, five piracies took place during last year, the two principal being those of the 8.3. "San Nam Hol" in January and of the s.s.Anking" in November. In these two piracies, three Europeari officers and two Indian guards were murdered; but it is a matter for congratulation that the Chinese authorities subsequently captured fifteen of the pirates and executed seven of them, while two of the pirates concerned in the "Anking" outrage were captured by the Hong Kong police in this Colony.

A notable feature of this year was the cordial co-operation te- tween the police in Canton and! Hong Kong with good results on. both sides. I sincerely hope that such co-operation will always con- tinue,, for it is one of the greatest) safeguards of law and order in this Colony, and it is also of material benefit to our neighbours in, Kwangtung.
For example, i December last the Hong Kong police were able to furnish the Canton authorities with guides and in them in Shanghai.
