PIRATES?

SUSPICIOUS CRAFT ON THE WEST RIVER

An incident of suspicious nature is said to have occurred on the West Elver, near a village called Kamchuk, where according to the Chinese mas- ter of the 3.8. "San Sai Kai," two launches had endeavoured to block his passage when steaming to Wu- chow last week. For some reason not yet ascertained, the launches 130Ted

away when theSan Sai Kai" approached.

The skipper is of opinion that the crews of the launches recognised his vessel to be a craft transporting only freight, and would not risk their The lives over such a poor haul. Chinese authorities in Wuchow have been notified of the incident.

"LOG RIDING

ADVENTURE OF A SAMPAN MAN

The thrills of surf riding are mild compared with that of log riding in the berbour. This was illustrated yesterday when a launch was seen towing a sampan with a number of logs astern, with two men riding on the logs. Everything went well until one of the logs became detached and drifted away with one of the men on it. The log drifted in the opposite direction from that in which the tow- ing launch was going, and the man on it had to shout long and loud be. fore he could attract the cozswain's attention to his plight. Then the launch turned back and picked up the stray log.

The Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty have approved the award; of prizes for the year 1928 to ad- vanced class boys entered in the Royal Navy from the training ships "Warsuite" and "Indefatigabla," and

a the "Lancashire and National Sea Training Homes. Prize, value . T. H. Bowling; 2nd prize, value £2, W. G. Baker, both entered from the training ship "War- spite."
