On the other hand, the Labour and Liberal nominees gave a much better im- pression, and if it were a case of voting for the more effective broad will casting speaker, I should certainly put my cross against Mr. Hamsay Muir. I have never seen the gen deep, well-modul tleman, but his sted voice gave the impression of an earnest and thoughtful person ality, and, if the Government is not averse to taking tip, they should seriously consider the possibility of giving their official representative a microphone test before sending him out to debate with the Opposition, says a writer in a Home paper to

The B.B.C. employeria method in presenting this political party debate. In an ordinary broadcast discussion, the two speak ers taking part usually sit at a small table,"

In this case each speaker had a small studio to himself when he was ac tually broadcasting. : While Sir Kingsley Wood was speaking, the other two speakers sat in a draw- fng-room at Savoy Ilill and listened to the broadcast through a loud speaker. At the end of the speech, Mr. Arthur Greenwood was taken to the studio on the first floor, and when he had finished returned to the drawing-room before Mr. Ram- say Muir, who followed him, began. Charles L Shepherd, noted pianist and exchestra conductor. has just been named musical direc- tor of KHJ, the Don Lee station in Los Angeles, according to announce- ment just made by Don Lec, who also owna KFRC in San Francisco. Į Besides directing the musical 30- tivities of the station, Shepherd will also conduct the popular Don Lee Symphony Orchestra, which has won a high place for itself within the last year in American music circles,

His elevation to one of the high- est posts in music work on the west coast reveals a human interest story that goes back to babyhood. His Shepherd has eight brothers. mother and father tried to interest all of them in music. When Charles was six years old, he was assigned the heartbreaking daily task of practising on the piano. He began his studies under the tutelage of his brother Arthur, who was 15 years older, and who to-day is: assistant conductor of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra and professor of music a Western Reserve College.

Charles, the new musical director of KHJ, had a yearning for the old swimming hole and the great outdoors. Constantly he escaped from the music room, to flee to the quiet retreats of nature near his home at Paris, Ida.

His mother took a trip to Eng- land, and then his grandmother came into the picture. She forced Charles to take off his shoes every time hy went to practise, and locked the windows, so he could not run away. And that marked the begin- ning of a successful musical career.

There was great consternation in the canine world a few weeks ago when

was decreed that no dogs in harness must roam the streets of Quebec. There was rumour that the great classic, the Eastern International Dog Sled Darby, was to be cancelled, that the Chateau team was to be banished from the terrace all sorts of horrible rumours; but, as afterward developed, the edict was not directed against any other than the small boy who, with a dog he may or may not be able to control, dodged under the horses" hoofs and car wheels, thus endangering his own life and others, including that of his dog.

So once again "Mountie, veteran Mounted Police dog, will, as leader of the Chateau Frentense team, wag his tail as the winter tourist pats his head.
