This was a long, narrow structure, also of attap,j bearing the legend "Samoan Res- taurant." An attap wall in the. middle divided the hall in two, the dancers having to dance their way through a low opening to the uther SHING
end.
Red and pink flowers adorned this wall and small alcove-like! structures built on two sides of the hall, whilst here and there were to be found banana and papaya trees in fruit, coconut palms with tempt ing green coconuts hanging on them, į sugar canes, and pineapples. More celluloid parrots and snakes peeped at one from anexpected nooks and corners, whilst occasionally the chirps of live birds attracted one's attention and closer inspection re- vealed, cunningly concealed amongst the trees, a cage made of split bam- boo with pretty little birds in it.
In the centre of the attap wall hung a beautiful painted portrait of Sir Frederick Lagard, a former Governor of Hong Kong, after whom the hostel was named. In keeping with the decoration, the lights were subdued with coloured paper wrap- ped round the bulbs, and shaded with cleverly woven shades made of strips of green palm leaves.
