The first race for the Admiral Tyrwhitt Cup was held yesterday, and there were 27 boats entered, most of H.M. vessels in port being represented.

The start was made at 2 p.m. and, owing to the absence of wind, it turned out to be more of a Adrifting match than a race. The starting point was from the "Tamar," and from there the boats passed south of Nos. 7 and 8 buoys, then to buoy No. 58, up to Cust Rock and back to the starting point in. a triangular course. To fulfil the conditions of the race it should have been, ne- cessary for this course to have been covered twice, but owing to the lack of wind, it was decided to reduce the distance to once round.

common sense, as given the right Small Units v Chinese Athletic, Council at the head of affairs the Club ground. Referee, Mr. Ander-one ruling body will settle the whole of the business of the sca- son, and Clubs' secretaries duties and responsibilities will be much more straightforward and element ary. These--the main features of this season's work of the Associa tion are an indication of points which will make the next. annual general meeting of more than usual interest. The Association is now an important branch of the Colony's Sporting interests. Its powers for the fostering of the game of "Soccer," and the equally important duty of assisting the Colony's charities, are great, and it is up to the Clubs to take a real interest in the proceedings and not leave it to a few.

The big match of the day is at Sookumpoo, where the Borderers meet the Chinese Athletic. This should be a fine match and I fancy the Borderers, who have beaten South China and the Police (the other leaders in the League) in successive matches, also Kowloon, The Borderers have come along in recent matches and have even an outside chance of still winning the League, and at least a good chance | of runners-up should they beat the Athletic. The latter will be as been on the points as the mili- tary side, however, and we should see a thrilling struggle with very little in the result.

The Police, who are still in the running for the League champion- ship, will have a real try out with the much improved Kowloon side,

whilst the latter will find the

The Royal Navy meet the R.A. at Caroline Hill and should win. The R.A. are also interested in the semi-final of the Shield, and can be expected to pat up a big fight. Leach will probably lead the RA's full strength in view of the big match on the following Saturday. Even so, they Royal Navy should just get home as they are at pre- sent able to field a strong side with most of the "Kent" Class In port

The junior programme is a good Here also the position at the top fa interesting. There is no reason why the K.O.S.B. and the Royal Navy should not win with ease, whilst the R.A., South Chină "B" and the Chinese Athletic should also secure full points.

JOTTINGS

During the week wins by the K.O.S.B. and the Chinese Athletic have made the First Division a more open affair than before. The championship this season promises an exciting finish, and the last match of the season may very probably decide the ultimate win-

Last evening when S.. A. Rum- jahn and J. S. McEachran faced each other for the third time to decide which was to qualify for the semi-final of the Open Singles Championship, a long dour con- test

was expected. These ex- not pectations, however, were realised for McEachran, who was evidently feeling the effects of so many long-drawn-out tussles, for which his style of play is largely responsible, retired after the first set. Rumjahn attacked from the outset and ran the older plager off his wearied feet, winning by 6-2. He now meets the winner of to- H. D. night's match between Rumjahn and Lim Peng-chin. A fight between the cousins should bo an interesting spectacle.
