OUR SHIPBUILDERS
ANNUAL DINNER IN INSTITUTE
HONG KONG'S FACILITIES
THE CHINA MAIL,
NYKLINE
There was a large and representa- tive gathering at the annual dinner of the Engineers' and Shipbuilders' Institute held last night at the newly decotated club premises, which in- cluded the Hon. Mr W. T Southern, the Hon. Sir Henry Pollock, KC., Commodore R. A. S.. Hill, the Hon. Mr. H. T. Creasy, the Hon. Commander G. F. Hole, Eng, Capt, T. F. Aitkenhead, Commander J. B. Newill and Mr. George Dun- can. Past presidents, present in- cluded Mr. R. M. Dyer, Mr. K. E. Greig, Professor C. A. Middleton. Smith, Mr. J. Ormiston, Mr. W. Russell, Mr. S. Baker and Mr. J. J. Harman, while officials of the In-
stitution included Mr. L. CE. Bellamy, Mr. G. F. Taylor, Mr. E. W. Blackmore, Mr. R. Kanter, Mr. A. H. McBride and Mr. A. Landsbert (hon. secretary). Others present were Capt. T. W. H. Hose- good, Major A. G. B. Stewart, Mr. B. Wylie, Mr.. R. Sutherland, Capt.
W. H. Mitchell, and Commander E.
Phillips.
Mr. L. J. Blackburn, presiding at the dinner, in the absence of Mr. W. J. Stokes, said that as the occa- sion of the annual dinner was looked apon as the "President's Night Out," he did not propose to inflict on the guests a speech of his own, but would simply act as a mouth- plece for the President.
The President's speech was then read out, which stated inter alia that it grieved him very much for not being able to welcome the guests in person owing to sickness. He, however, assured those present that the Institution was proud to have the privilege of their presence and of welcoming other friends.
Not Super-Men "Engineers and shipbuilders are not, however, super-men, they can- not continuously confine them- selves to the calculus and the solu- tion of stressés in structures but require a little relaxation to rub off the rigidity of their daily toil.
This is provided for by means of our Action library, billiards and the various anvisements which appeal to business men from day to day.
Since its incorporation in 1891 it
bas had on its membership roll more than 2,100 names, many of them are now kept in our memory only by the works they did and yet we still have others of them with us and I espé- wish to mention Mr. W. S. Baileya foundation member. whose original Regimental number was 9.
