WOMEN'S HOSTEL

CONCERT FOR BUILDING FUND

GROWDED ATTENDANCE

By permission of the Vice-Chan cellor of the Hong Kong Univer alty, a concert and dance in aid of the building fund of the Univer- alty Women's Hosiel, organised by the women undergraduates, wore successfully held in the Great Hail of the University on Saturday even- Ing.

About 400 tickets were sold long. before Saturday and these, to- gether with those who paid for their admission at the door, brought the number of the attendance to the vicinity of 500, all of whom spent a very enjoyable evening

Effective Decorations

The decorations carried out by the Women Undergraduate Body Committee were on simple lines, but nevertheless very effective and pleasing. The broad stairs lead- ing up to the Great Hall were flanked with flower plants and palms in pots, whilst the interior of the Hall was decorated with streamers around the pillars and between. hanging in loops in These were in the 'Varsity colours." Inside the entrance to the Great Hall were erected, on each side of the door, two atalle laden with chocolate and candy done up in 'boxes to represent bricks with the above following inscriptions them:-

"Buy Nestles' Chocolate and Bonbons",

"Buy Bricks of Best Bonbons to help build the Woman's Hostel".

"Buy Blue Bird's Toffee and Home-made Candy".

"Be a Brick and Buy a Brick for the Women's Hostel".,

Water colour paintings of Hong Kong views, prettily framed, aç- cupled the centres of the two stalls. These two pretty pictures were done by a clever painter who preferred to remain unknown, and were offered for sale to the highest bidders.

The Concert Programme The function opened with a very enjoyable concert programme which started promptly at 8 p.m. In spite of the fact that following the exam- ple of the donor of the paintings those taking part in the concert elected to be unnamed on the pro- gratume, we are not betraying any secret in saying that they were well- known 'Varsity favourites, and as usual, they one and all acquitted themselves admirably.

The "mystery" programme was as follows:--

Overture"The Toastmaster,"

-(H. F. Odell).

Vocal Trio The Goslings,"

(Sir Fredrick Bridge). Pianoforte Duat "I Corricolo

Galop,"

(Durand de Grau).

Dance "Olman River." Pianoforte Solo-"Liebestraum,"

(Frank Liszt). Vocal Solo-"Immortality,"

(Hermann Lobr). Sketch-"Up to Date,"

Dance-"Minuet." Finale "Goodnight.”

Refreshments were served after the concert, and then dancing was indulged in to excellent musk by the Chinese Amateur Musical Asso-

clation.

(Sybil Caldwell).

The women undergraduates with to express their very sincere thanks to the following:-

The Chinese Amateur Musical Association for dance music.
