"How did you get here?" he asked.

Why this difference?

Another factor which influences tyre wear is starting and stopping. With the Increased number of vehicles on the road, congestion is such in clties and towns that stopping and starting occur more frequently than before. Linked up with this factor is the question of 'four-wheel brakes. Most pre- sent-day cars are fitted with very efficient braking systems on all wheels. Consequently the car is brought to rest more quickly than with two-wheel brakes, which tend to grind away the tread rubber much quicker.

This is more or less, the broad outline of the effect of new condi- lions of use on tyra aquipment. It must be conceded, however, that

'BALLOON TYRES

HOW TO APPLY

PATCHES

**

Driving a balloon tyre flat is ruinous to the shoe. This is be- cause of two conditions - the walls of the oversize tyre are half as thick as the normal tyre, and consequently offer half the resist- ance to rim cutting; and, fur- ther, the small rim used for the tyre is more penetrating than the larger diameter is, so that in the lopsided condition caused by a de- flated tyre there is a grinding action of the shoe between the rim an the road. Apart from the distorted condition of a car with a deflated balloon tyre, the trac- tion and steering are difficult, even if the tyre is removed to allow running on the rim.

For these reasons every user| of a balloon tyre equipped car should carry and know how to apply patches, making the re Ipairs at the roadside when neces- sary. Preferably, a small vul- caniser should be used in patch- ing, as the patches are subjected to much flexing. Cold patches are more or less uncertain; blow-out patches to place inside the shoe are required.

They jshould be of ample size to go in

under the tyre bead.
