PROFESSOR'S THEORIES

Cost of Artificial Cooling

A lecture on "Cold in the Tropics—the Possibility of Manufac- tured Weather" was delivered by Professor C. A. Middleton Smith, M.Sc., M.I. Mech. E., Taikoo Professor of Engineering in the Univer- sity of Hong Kong, at the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders last night, His Excellency the Governor presiding.

Professor Middleton Smith showed how it was possible to re- gulate the temperature of the tropics, and after a full explanation of the methods, illustrated by a number of experiments, gave details of the approximate cost of artificial cooling.

II.E. the Governor said that he was pleased of the opportunity, first, because the Taikoo Professor of Engineering at the University was addressing members of the Institu- tion of Engineers and Shipbuilders, between which two bodies there should be the closest aison. He

hoped that there would be other lectures before the Institution by Professors of the University and also lectures to the University by members of the Institution. The subject of the lecture was one of Immenso interest. What a boon it would be if a suitable rainfall could be manufactured at the present moment, not a deluge like that of 1926, but a suitable rainfall which would fill the reservoirs and keep them up to level. What also would the Colony give to ensure really royal weather for the forthcoming Marseilles, Londen, Antwerp, Rotter visit of HR.H. the Duke of Glouce
