[By the Rev. Dr. Boyd Scolt]

That is to say, He is found of some as the result of much reasoning and the pursuit of one speck of light in a sky that is obscure and cold.

Very wisely and suggestively, after the full-orbed splendour and joyful effulgence Christmas Day are over, the Church sets apart, in Epiphany, a special day for the remembrance and encourage ment of those who, by reason of their locality and temperament, see no more than one star in the Christian firmament, and who find much to be obscure in what others see plain and spaciously clear. For There are many such souls. them there are statements and rituals that have clustered about Jesus in Christian tradition, which leave their minds at a loss and their On the other hearts quite cold. hand, they have recognised and saluted certain simple convictions about Christ, His being and work, which pierce the cloudy sky with a thin shaft of light, and shine be- fore them as clear and steadily as the Bethlehem star.

If you do, you may very well be surprised at the wonderful things you shall discover further in the field of Christian beliet.

You may surely find your soul coming daily eo close, and more closely still, to the star, as to discover it growing a radiant planet, a shining into world greater far than the firma- ment which the Shepherds saw full of light and the chants of angole. Hearken to this word that was written by Hosea for you: "Then shall we know if we follow on to know the Lord." And take thisa word of Pascal's to your conscience: "There are but two classes of men who can be called reasonable those who serve God with their whole I would ask those whose spiritual heart because they know Him, and ancestry is found among the Shep-those who seek Him with their

God, but who is honest enough to say that this and that, which you and I may think to be of the' essence of the Faith, are obscure to him, do not call his incapacity a sin, but, at the hardest, his mis- fortune only. Remember that the three Magi, with their solitary star, have as sure a place in the Gospels as the Shepherds with the beavens ablazo about them. And notice this as well, that it was those

three Christians of the solitary star who alone are described as bringing gifts to the Holy Child Jesus Have you never seen this fulfilled nowadays. Indeed, have you not observed that the most fruitful disciples in generous service to wards Christ are not always to be found among those who seem to be tenants of full glory of Christian belief and platy, Hke the Shepherds in the unclouded radiance of the Bethlehem hills? As often as not, they are to be encountered among them that folow in the wake of the solitary star.

Mr. Chu Chang-nfen, who has been appointed Minister to Norway and Sweden, is entirely a new type | of Chinese official. He was for many years a successful business man in Shanghai. Very popular with the British and American community, he left his business to assist his friend, Dr. C. T. Wang in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. When he was appointed, there was some surprise that one who had not been specially trained in foreign affairs should be given such a high position as Councillor. He has. however, more than earned "salt" by his very competent hand- ling of the negotiations with Sir Miles Lampson, which culminated in the signing of the British Treaties.

the This, next to Japanese negotiations, was the most difficult task facing the Ministry' of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Chu's appointment is undoubtedly a re- ward for having done a remarkably good job.
