DISTINGUISHED CAREER

London, Yesterday. The death is announced of Sir Hayes Marriott, K.B.E.. CM.G Reuter.

[Sir Hayes Marriott, K.B.E., C.M.G.. was until recently Colonial Secretary of the Straits Settlements. He had for some time past been seriously ill in London. Sir Hayes Marriott was born in 1873, son of the Rev. W. H. Marriott, Vicar of Thrussington in Leicestershire. After a distinguished career at Cambridge he entered the Straits Settlements Civil Service as a Cadet in 1896. His first tour of service was noticeable for a period of four years' work as District Officer at Alor Gajah, Malacca, More than twenty faultless volumes of Native Titles written out and registered in Mr. Marriott's neat script still form the foundation of land work in the District and earn the grateful bless ings of his successor.
