BUSINESS FIRM'S CLAIM UPHELD'

SUMMARY COURT CASE

Judgment was delivered by his Honour the Pulane Judge (Mr. Justice Jacks) in the Summary Court yesterday, in a case in which the Hip Lung Kee firm sued the Wo Chan firm for $570 balance due for goods sold and delivered. His Lordship said:-

Uncasiness is growing in 'many quarbers concerning the proposed bridge across the Thames at Rich mond, a design for which by Mr. Maxwell Ayrton is now under con sideration.""

Besides the adverse report by the Royal Fine Art Commission, the Surrey County Council has strongly criticised the scheme.

The plaintiffs, when making statement of particulars of their claim, omitted items both as to the The Royal Fine Art Commission credit and debit sides of their ac-aald that the design was "unault count but, though they remedied able in character for Ita site and these Immediately it was unfortun-environment," and added the com- ate, for their omissions gave the dement: fendants cause to challenge the

POWERS ON THE ROADS

"From the point of view of the. railway service, the year 1928 has been disastrous," states Mr. J. H. Thomas, M.P., in a New Year's message to "The Rallway Review," the organ of the National Union of Railwaylen.

"There have been several serious railway accidents, resulting In loss of life, which is deployed by all ranks of the service; and there has been such a fall in traffic receipts as seriously to threaten the economle position of the railway companies,

Disputed Entry

The disputed entry of $570 is due in respect of one consignment of goods which, though it does not appear in the plaintiffs' cash book, does appear to have been entered in the usual way in other books kept by them and I am satisfled ft is a genuine claim.

The plaintiffs admit a rebate of $4.40 should have been allowed in respect of a cask which was returned and which will reduce their claim to $565.60. The sum of 306 has been paid into court.

I accordingly give judgment for the plaintiffs for $469.60 with costs, and order that $96 paid into the court by the defendants be paid to the plaintiffs.

Mr. A. el Areulli appeared for platatiffs and Mr. C.A.S. Russ for defendants.

Its dramatic and fortified appear ance stems so foreign to ita qulat surroundings and presents so strik- ing a contrast to the neighbour hood, that the Royal Commission accordingly expressed a hope that the architect might be consulted as to simplifying some of the more out- standing features of the project.

The Commission feel strongly that this problem of setting and en- vironment-la of the first importance. The Task Ahead

Mr. C. T. Crump, Industrial secretary of the N.U.R., writes:

"During 1920 I am hoping to ser a great advance in the direction of augmenting rail services by rail- way-owned road motor transport. I believe that during the next few years our Industry will be trans- formed from purely rail to a great rall and road transport system. We cannot stem the tide of invention, nor is it desirable that we should, even if we were able.
