sincere workers

Cecil B. De Mille was master- of-ceremonies. He eulogized Griffith and said that his ideals had been the inspiration of all in the industry. "Sculpture had its Rodin," he asid, "music its Wagner and Beethoven, the art of painting its Rembrandt, literature its Shakespeare and in the motion picture art, the great est in point of popularity and ap- preciation, has its Griffith."

De Millo went on to say that it Was Griffith's sheer conoclastic disregard for established filming methods in 1998 that paved the way for the presentera of technical and artistic pictorial screen triumphs.

"The motion pictures owe more to Mr. Griffith," he concluded,

"than to any other individual or

set of individuals ever associated

with the art.”

Presentation

At the conclusion of his speech, De Mille presented Griffith with a gold engraved watch as a token of the industry's appreciation of his efforts,

MEN OF STEEL

THIRILLING FILM AT MAJESTIC

Thrills of the sort you see once in a lifetime are in store for motion picture patrons in "Men of Steel" First National's big steel photoplay which is now showing at the Majestic Theatre, Kowloon, with Milton Sills in the starring role and Doris Kenyon as the featured feminine player.

Sills has always been known as a "he man." In past pictures he has been called upon to perform some difealt feats, but in "Men of Steel" he surpasses anything he has ever done on the screen both in scenes calling for strength and courage and in acting.

For example, there ia a scene in which Sills and Victor McLaglen are trapped in a huge vat in a steel mill. A maniac is trying Įto dump a ladle of molten steel an their heads.. Sills catches hold

WESTERN DRAMA

TIM MCCOY'S "LAW OF THE ·

"The Law of The Range," a new secretary-general of the Faris and exciting drama of the west Opera, has been, as he says, a wit will be seen at the Star Theatre ness of almost all the events that to-day during the 5.15 p.m. per- have influenced the course of French formance and also to-morrow at music during the last twenty-five 2.30 and 5.15 pm, years. He has collected in Tin McCoy plays the role of a "La Musique Retrouree" (Librairie dashing peace officer of the '80's in the days when the bad пад Pion) his impressions and experi- ences during his singularly import- roamed the plains of Texas and ant period in the evolution of justice was on the side of the man

than ordinary sweetheart. interest.

Appropriately enough, he starts with the year 1902, which was to mark the history of music with a memorable date that of the first production at the Opera Comique of Debussy's "Pelleas et Melisande" on April 30 of that year. From the first M. Laloy was one of the little band of enthusiasts, which included Charles Bordes, who did all in their violent attacks concerted against power to protect Debussy from the

him by the Press and official musical opinion. The work created an astonishing amount of hostility in all spheres, from the musicians in the orchestra upwards. The violinists, W€ are- told, wore especially indignant because they had

nothing to play: dur- ing the grotto знале. The unofficial programme sold at the theatre doors actually contained sarcastic and would-be humorous commentaries on thelpiece, the fail- ure of which was to the man in the street a foregone conclusion.

Debussy in Private Life

It was only thanks to the firmness and perspicacity of MM. Albert Carre and Andre Messager (then directors of the Opera Comique) that the work was not only given at all, but given in the best possible conditions with a picked and ideal cast. Had M. Maeterlinck been able to enforce his will, the result might have been very different--but the history of these intrigues surround- ing the production of a masterpiece is too well known to call for com- ment. It is nevertheless amus- ing to think that a critic like M. Camille Bellaigue could write in the Revuo des Deux Mondes in May, 1902, that in his opinion "Pelleas". was only a noise et meme un

vilain petit bruit." It was the articles of M. Laloy, on the other hand, which first attracted 'De- bussy's attention, and thus prepared the way for the friendship of these

men, which remained unbroken until Debussy's death.

An interesting feature of the book

Sills would not allow a double to take his place. It was his picture and he took the chances. This is just one of the many thrills that fill this picture from start to finish and place it far above the ordinary "special." George Archainband directed the picture.

The year 1907 was also memor- able. Paul Dukas had written and seen produced "Ariane et Barbe Bleue"; Strauss's "Salome" played for the first time in Paris; and in June. Serge Diaghileu came for the first time to Paris and astonished and delighted musicians of all shades and tendencies with his production of "Boris Godonnov," with Chaliapine in the title-part. "Boris" (which Charles Bordes dubbed “Legrand-papa ・・・ de 'Pelleas".") took Paris by storm, as did in subsequent years the first Diaghilev Ballets. Then in 1913 Stravinsky's "Sacre" exploded like a bomb, and another new era in music began.

The War and After During the war the Opera, of which M. Laloy had recently been appointed secretary-general, con tinued to function, though as can easily be imagined, only in face of the gravest difficulties. Perform- ances, which generally took place in the afternoons owing to the fre quency of nocturnal bombardments, in 1918 were also liable to be dis- turbed by the daylight attentions of

a grosse Bertha."

The post-war period of French music is briefly reviewed by M. Laloy, whose sympathy with "les jeunes" is well known." The strange. personality of Erik Satie is the sub- ject of some interesting pages: the relations with account of his Debussy that strange, jealous friendship that existed between the two musicians is a curious revela- tion of artistic psychology.
