LAWN BOWLS
A NEW ANNUAL + COMPETITION
THE CHINA MAIL,
| HAPPY NEW YEAR GATHERING
A new annual lawn bowls com petition was. Inaugurated on the gviens of the Kowloon Bowling Green Club yesterday afternoon when a match was played between bowlers of Kowloon and Hong Kong for possession of the Aitkenhead Shield, a new trophy presented for annual competition by Mr. Robert Aitkenhead.

Kowloon won oned to play in such an important every rink, and secured the Shiold; with a total score of 140, against { their opponents' 117. On two rinka only one point divided the sides. The heaviest Kowloon victory was the win of W. C. Brown's rink over that skipped by R. Duncan. The Bcores were 29-16.
H. E. Présent
His Excellency the Officer Ad- ministering the Government, (the Hon. Mr. W. T. Southern, C.M.G.,) was an interested spectator.
After the match, Me.. B. Wylie, President of the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association, addressed the gathering, and asked Mrs. Macfar lane to present the Shield to the successful Kowloon bowlers.
President's Speech
Mr. Wylie said he was sure they would all agree that they had had a very happy day. That day was, perhaps, another landmark in the history of local own bowls as they had played for the trophy for the first time. They would also agree that it was a very appro-! priate namo. (laughter).
The speaker continued that Mr. Robert Aitkenhead on coming to the Colony in 1987 to play inter- port howls, presented the money for, the trophy. It was very for- tunate that the trophy should be amed for him because no finer bowler ever came to Hong Kong (applause). Most of them would remember the interport game of Inst year and Mr. Wylie said, per- sonally he had never seen, better bowls before or since. He did not know why Mr. Aitkenhead left the. money but it was perhaps to help them to play better bowls (laugh- ter).
Mr. Wylie continued that they were pleased to have the trophy because for many years they had always had something in the na- ture of a gathering at the Club on New Year's Day. That was principally due to the generosity of the Lawn Bowls Association who invited people to play bowls оп Now Year Day
in Kow- loon. It Was generally in the nature of A match bé- tween England and Scotland While it was true that Scotland mostly won (laughter) yet thore was at various times a little arl- ticism us to the teams which were chosen to play on that day-not that it detracted in any way from the happiness of the gathering.
As they now had the trophy, the Association proposed that it should be played for every New Year's Day, the idea being that it should he competed for between teams from Hong Kong and Kowloon. It was also proposed that the match should take place in Kowloon one year and Hong Kong the next, and so on alternately. To elaborate the idea still further the side which won the trophy, should de- posit it with the oldest club on either side. He was happy to. Hay that this year the trophy had gone to Kowloog (af plause). Kowloon had 139 points and Hong Kong 117, leaving a margin of 22 points in favour of Kowloon.
Before closing, said Mr. Wylie, he would like to thank the sub- committee on behalf of the Asao- ciation, for the
very good work they had done in connection with making the arrangements. The sub-committee was composed of) Mesars. Massey, Fraser, Souza, Rumjahn and Tacchi,
On behalf of the Association, Mr. Wylie thanked those present for the support given to the col- lection for St. Dunstan's Home which had realised $37.60. Hp also thanked the Kowloon Bowling Green Club for the loan of their greens.
Mr. Wylie then asked Mrs. Macfarlane to present the trophy io Mr. W. Russell as the oldest member of the Kowloon Club,
The Shield
Mrs. Macfarlane then presented the shield, after which she dis tributed silver spoons to each man in the winning rinks:
She was then presented with a bouquet by Miss Edith Hoare. Mr. Wylie asking Mra, Hoare to accept it with their thanks for distributing the shield and spoons:
Mr Wylie then went on to ex- press their pleasure at the attend- ance of His Excellency. He had not been invited by the Bowls As sociation, continued Mr. Wylie, nor had he been invited by the Kow- loon Bowling Green Club. He had attended as a bowler for the Hong Kong side,
