Jacques Marchegay, assistant general secretary of the Comite Central des Armateurs de France (Association of French shipowners) has for the third time delivered a ropert on the shipping industry, In the pointed out that the ton- nage of the merchant. fleet on January 1 aggregated 3,440,616 tons gross, France thus holding sixth place among, maritime countries, and coming after Great Britain, the United States, Japan, Germany and Italy,
During the years 1920 and 1927, French shipowners had continued to renew their fleets by disposing of 153,000 tons for breaking up. but the output of French shipyards which reached 121,342 tons in 1926, dropped to 44,355 tons in 1927.
As regards the activity of the French merchant marine, Mr. Marchegay stated that It WAS satisfactory. The figure of laid-up tonnage which aggregated 233,000 tons on January 15, 1926, was 181,000 tons on January 16, 1928, and 168,000 tons on July 15 last, thus showing a marked decrease,
