Activity in centrifugal sugar was confined to purchases in small scale, mostly intended for local consump- tion. Both Manila and Iloilo ruled quiet at P3.75-P9.00 and 28.50- P8.75, respectively. The general impression among dealers was that the worst has already been reached and that whatever change the mar- ket may take in the future will likely be for the better. New York ruled firmer owing to local and out- side buying interest. Price advanc- ed to 3.50 cents, and later to 3.89 cents, at which price, the market closed with buyers but no sellera. There were vague rumours of a possible increase in the United States tariff duty by 50 cents per hundred-weight on raw sugar and 75 cents on refined,

"OVERLAND CHINA MAIL" ILLUSTRATED.

CHINA NEWS, LOCAL NEWS

AND ALL THE NEWS

SEND IT HOME!

Batch after batch of residents has returned to Hong Kong after holidays at Home and elsewhere. For the first few days one's conscience can be calmed by thoughts that time is needed to unpack and to get settled down again. Then that letter must go.

What you have to say for yourself no one else can write for you; but if you want to ease anxiety as to what is hap- pening out here that is a task that the "Overland China Mail" will do for you as it has invariably done in the past.

How many times were you "stumped" when somebody asked you about conditions in China? Show that you are at least thoughtful by sending them a copy of the "Overland." That will tell them all they want to know.

The "Overland" is the only weekly budget of Hong Kong and China news that is illustrated. Its topical pictures, cover- ing a variety of subjects, are very welcome.

This week's "Overland" includes articles on the following subjects:-

The trial of Carvalho Yeo in connection with the alleged Treasury Fraud.

The Story of the Life of Dr. Miao Chung-yi, convicted at Home of murder.

Promotion of a Cadet and a P.W,D. official, Deadlock in negotiations between China and Japan. Steps by the National Government of China to reduce the power of the provinces.

Violent typhoons south of Hong Kong and in the Pacific. A Home mail via Siberia closes at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday. This will reach London about Dec. 22. It will be an excellent Christmas present from Hong Kong-ites who have just got back.
