MARITIME COMMITTEE'S FIRST

CONFERENCE

SHIPPING & PUBLIC

London, Shipping and the gen- eral public throughout the world

benefit will

by the first conference of the Inter national Radio Maritime Com- mittee, which is being held in London. The International Com- mittee was formed at a meeting nt.San Sebastian, Spain, In Septem- ber, consisting of representatives of the principal wireless maritime companies of the world. The dele- gates are the guests of the Mar- coni International Marine Com- munication Co., Ltd., and the con- ference was opened at Marconi House, when a welcome was extended to them by officially the Right Hon. F. G. Kellaway, managing director of the company,

Several social gatherings are being held while the conference is sitting, and a dinner-presided over by Senatore Marconi-waa given AL the Hyde Park Hotel to the delegates to the COT- ference and representatives of the

of

the leading British ship-

ning organisations and Govern- I'ment departments, who were by this means able to give formal recogni- tion to the International Radio Maritime Committee, in whose ac-. tivities they are interested.

For Eficient Organisation The committee has been called into existence owing to the growing im- portance of wireless in connection with the trade and commerce of the sen, both as a means of communi- cation, and as an aid to navigation. In order to ensure the most elicient organisation and the most complete and satisfactory service to the ship- ping industry and to the public a very complete system of co-opera- tion is required, and during the pre- sent conference daily meetings are being held to discuss means of fur- ther developing the use of wireless on international lines, including such aspects of wireless communi- |cation and organisation as technical development: the provision of ser vice and maintenance depots and reserve wirdless operators in all parts of the world; facilitating traffic and accountancy; and the extension of arrangements for the interchange of telegraph traffic, relaying messages, expediting de- livery, &c.

It is believed that the committee. may materially further the work re~ lating to wireless at the conference on the safety of life at sea which is to be held next year.. the dinner the most cordial speeches were made; showing that
