In reporting the trial of the men arrested in connection with the Shasi piracy, the "Hankow Herald" says that it was revealed that the original object of the gang was to kidnap an eight-year old child of the concubine of a certain Szechuan General named Pel Chu in General Yang Sen's camp. The concubine is stated to Have $800,000, recently deposited in one of the banks in Hankow. It was the plot of the pirates to carry off her child to Chiakow and then demand a huge ransom, but, as matters turned out, she got wind of the plot and took another steamer.
