DOCTOR CRITICISED

+

ALLEGED REFUSAL TO AT- TEND DYING WOMAN

r

The Sulford .coroner (Mr. Howard Flint) at an inquest at Pendleton expressed disapproval of what he described as the callous conduct of a doctor.

The inquest was on Mrs. Hannah Parr, a member of the Sulford Guardians, who was knocked down by t motor-car recently.

P. C. Kenyon said as the woman was seriously injured he sent an- other officer to the surgery of Dr. Hill, a few yards away, but the doctor refused to assist. He then went to the surgery himself and asked the doctor to attend as the woman was apparently bleeding to death, but he again refused.

"I am sorry I have no jurisdic- tion in this case," said the coron er, "but the jury will join with me in expressing disapproval of this callous conduct." "

The inquest was adjourned in definitely.

COSTLY “LADDERS "

STOCKING THAT COULD SAVE WOMEN MILLIONS

HOSTERY SAFEGUARDING

Nottingham. - Mr. Douglas Hacking, M.P., Parliamentary Secretary of the Overseas Trade Department, opening the exhibi tion of hosiery machinery, and textile appliances, at Nottingham, sald:-

Assuming there are: 17,000,- 000 women in the United King-| dom, of whom 10,000,000 wear silk or artificial silk stockings at 3s. a pair and eight pairs a year (I do not think this extra- vagent), £12,000,000 is annual lynt by women.

What an enormous saving could be made if a holeless or ladderless stocking could be pro luce 1. Every time a stocking ladders, it means good money thrown away. Here is a great opportunity for a close investi- gation for the adaptation of new conditions.

Mr. Hacking stated that while 8,000 hosiery operatives were totally unemployed, we imported anually £4,000,000 of foreign hosiery.

"The last application for a duty failed," he added, "but it may be casier to get. the industry safe- guarded after the next general election."

His department's inability to got foreign Governments to modify their tariffs was because under our free trade aystem wel could not say to them, "If you raise your barriers against our goods we shall put up barriers against yours.
