BOXING CONTROL

DEFINITE STEP TOWARDS BOARD

BRIBERY IN SPORT

A definite step towards the formation of a Board of Control for Malayan boxing both profes- sional and amateur was taken at a meeting held

in the Victoria! Memorial Hall when a council was elected to deal with the drawing up of rules and other business."

Mr. Dennis Santry was elected to the Chair.

Mr. F. C. Johnson, addressing the, meeting, pointed out the numerous rensons why control was needed. He emphasised the destructive in- fluence which unsporting persons exercised on the sport by attempt- ing to bribe boxers and remarked that this was a state of affairs which was apparent in ineal foot- hall also Mr. Johnson cited recent incidents which had come to his knowledge and which would not occur if there was proper control.

Amateurism

The meeting unanimously carried a resolution confirming the. forma- tion of a Malayas Baring Board of Control and Amateur Boxing Asso ciation.

The Chairman' expressed the opinion that the efforta of the Board should first he directel to- wards the building up of amateur boxing. The promotion of interest In amateur boxing, he thought.! would eventually clean up the pro-| fessional side of the sport and putj the whole on a proper standing! The meeting approved the ap-1 pointment of H. E. Major Generall

as vice van Straubenzee, G.0.C. president. The following were elected patrons: Dr. Hoops, Dr. Winstedt, the Hon. Mr. N. G.) Sing Phang, Mr. F. R. Herron.
