LACK OF SIDING.

ACCOMMODATION

TRAFFIC RELIEF

The question of the alleged' in- adequate siding accommodation at the Alexandra Docks, Newport, bas again been raised by colliery owners, shipowners and shipping' agents, and the hope is expressed that the scheme prepared some years ago by the Great Western Railway Company, the owners of】 the docks, which to a larga extent had been abandoned, will be put into operation. Thousands of tons of coal from the castern and west- ern valleys of Monmouthshire, It is atated, for which Newport in the natural port of shipment, are every week sent either to Cardiff or Barry because colllery owners and traders are not given adequate facilities at Newport for the recep tion and, clearance of traffic.

This is a very serious matter for the port. The East Mendalgief Bridge, described as a bottle neck for traffic to and from the docks, has been a handicap The sug- gestion is made therefore that a

new road should be constructed to join up a large number of sidingst that might be laid down on the vacant land to the weat, which would serve hoists at the far end of the South Dock, and tips and hoists that it would be possible to erect on quays.of the proposed new cut. This would give necessary relief to trafe coming from the eastern and Western valleys at East

and Mendalgief Bridge, facilitato the manipulation of traffic for coal export

The P. & O. 8.3. "Kashmir" left Singapore for this port on October 29 at 6 am, and is due here to- morrow at about 6 a.m.

The C.P.S. R.M.S. "Empress of Asia" arrived at Manila yesterday at 7 an. leaves Manila to-day at 4 pm, and is due at Hong Kong on Sunday at 7 a.m.
