INAUGURAL CELEBRATION,

THE CHINA MAIL,

Several nationalities and many influential residents of Hong Kong were present on Saturday night at the ceremonial banquet "heid' in the Kam Ling restaurant, West Point, to celebrate the Inauguration of the Chinese Seamen's Associated Union.

About a hundred sat down to an excellent repast, there being almost as many foreigners as Chinese.

The Lyric Dance Orchestra die coursed musical selections during the evening.

Mr. Leung Yuen-wo (chairman) presided. His son, Mr, K. C. Leung (secretary of the Union), was In charge of the entertainment of guesta.

Amicable Relations

The chairman delivered a speech of welcome in Chinese and Mr. Lam Shiu-pang acted as interpreter. Mr. Leung emphasized the aims of the Union as being as follow:-

1. To consolidate the diverse mass of Chinese scamen, purging it of all undesirable elements. more especially those with com- munistic leaninga.

2. To work for improved and amicable relations between em- ployer and employee, Le., be tween the shipping companies and the Chinese Beamen serving on their vessels.

Mr. Leung attributed success in formation to to contributory

forces-direction and encourage- ment from the Hong Kong Govern- ment, and the Inspiration and guidance of the educational, govern- mental, commercial and Industrial communities of the Colony.

- Foreign Support

Mr. K. C. Leung also spoke and appealed for non-Chinese support for the Union, extending a warm welcome to all present, particularly the foreigners.
