BI-CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS, OF THE BIRTH OF CAPTAIN JAMES COOK. -- A Plgrimage of Remembrance was held on Sept. 9 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Captain James. Cook, the discoverer of Australia, to Yorkshire, the County in which he was born and where he spent his early boyhood. SEATTLE SPIRIT

GREAT LONDON TO BRIGH- TON WALK. The 10th annual walking race promoted by the Surrey Walking Club, for which there were 110 entrants was won on Sept. 8 by W. F. Baker (Queen's Park. Harriere) who covered the approximate 52 miles in 8hrs. 32mins. 39seca. This is the fourth year he has won this event since 1923. C. . Giani, last year's winner came second. Sponging down W. F. FLYING ROUND THE WORLD' IN A LIGHT SEAPLANE AT 56 YEARS OF AGE- Mr. G. H. Storck, an American airman who is to attempt an aerial tour round the world, in an "Avro Avian" light 'plane fitted with floats. Mr. Storck claims to have been round the globe eleven times and first flew in 1907 in a machine of his own design and construc- tion, in Florida. He is from Seattle, Washington and Jacksonville, Florida. His machine is named "Seattle Spirit" and starts from Hamblé, near Southampton, Hants, England.- (Sport and General).

HOLIDAYS ARE OVER-Back to school again is the cry all over England. A scene at Eton College, Windsor, one of England's most famous public schools, on Sept. 20. A merry line of new boys at Eton in their world-famous attire, taking a look round the col- leges. They do not seem at all perturbed at the prospect of the new term.-(Sport and General).

NOTABLE VISITOR TO LONDON. The Sultan of Muscat and Oman, Sir Saiyid Taimur Bin Faisal Bin Turki, who has "been staying at Skegness recovering from: the effects of an operation, arrived on. a visit to Landon ori Sept. 15. CHARING CROSS TRAIN SMASH.-Between twenty and thirty people-most of them girls were injured when an electric train, crowded with passengers from Sidcup, Kent., crashed into the buffers at Charing Cross Station,. The second and third coaches of the. train were slightly telescoped, and parts of the carriages had to be sawn away before it was possible to reach some of the girls imprisoned in the wreckage. Several of the more seriously injured were taken to Charing Cross Hospital. Our picture shows the end por- tion of the first class coaches, which were telescoped. (Sport and General)

AN EXHIBITION-(On the right) 'The model engineering exhibi- tion held at the Horticultural Hall, London, was officially opened by an automaton de- vised and constructed by Cap- tain W. H. Richards. The Mechanical "Man," seen sitting, rose and bowed to the audience. made his speech and resumed his seat. Worked electrically, he did these movements in re- sponse to verbal commands from his exhibitor. The pro- duction of speech is a secret of the Maker, and is produced neither by gramophone records,

LONDON'S PROBABLE NEW LORD MAYOR-If, as lis thought certain in the city, Sir Kynaston Studd becomes the next occupant of the Mansion House, London will have a Princess for Lady Mayoress, as Lady Studd, was, before, her marriage, Princess Alexandra Lieven, daughter of Prince Paul Lieven, grand master of ceremonies at the Russian Imperial Court. Sir Kynaston, who is 70 years of age, is one of three brothers, who won fame at cricket and is president of the famous Polytechnic Institution, Regent atreet, originally founded by his father.(Sport and Gen-
