FLYING PRINCESS

of on the coast Iceland has been identified as part of the machine in which Princess Lowenstein-Werthelm set out from England on August 31, 1927, in un attempt to fly the Atlantic..

The first anniversity of the pre- sumed death of Princess Lowon atein-Wertheim (sister of the Eart of Mexborough) was commemorated {yesterday by a Mass which will be said annually in perpetuity in St. Raphael's Roman Catholic Church, Kingston-on-Thames.

The Princess, with Colonel F. F. Minchin and Mr. Leslie Hamilton, left Upavon, Wilts, on August 31, lost year, to fly to America, hut after passing over the Irish coast they were not heard of again.

It Is a remarkable coincidence that on this anniversary informa tion was published in the "Morning" Post" of the discovery, on the Icel andic coast of an aeroplane' wheel which has been identified as part of the machine in which the Princess was lost.

This aeroplane wheel bore the trade mark "Palladium Cord,” fol- lowed by the worda "Aero Standard 1,000, plus 220." On another sec- tion of the wheel are the numbers 106009, 7-27.

The Princess was blessed by the Archbishop of Cardiff before start- ing, and her Fokker machine was sprinkled with holy water.

A short Roman Catholic Bervice was conducted bealde the machine in the half light of the morning, and a few minutes laterat 7.16 on August 31 last year-St. Raphael, carrying the Princess and those two fine and fearless pilots,

THE

TOTE"

AN APPEAL MADE, TO INVENTORS

BOARD'S SEARCH

Totalisator Machines.-All per sons desirous of bringing to the notice of the Racecourse Betting Control Board Inventions relating to Totalisators should communicate with the Secretary of the Control Board,

The above announcement, which advertisement appears in the columns of "The Daily Telegraph," is the first stop taka by, the Race, course Betting Contral Board to thei Introduction of the Totalisator. -

Detailing the procedure to be followed by the Board, Sir Reginald' Blair (the acting chairman), con- Armed the announcement recently made in "The Daily Telegraph" that the Introduction of the Totalleator was not likely to take place before the commencement of| the next flat-racing season.

There is no reason,, as was also explained in these columns, why the parl-mutuel should not be worked in the meantime. Sir Reginald said:

I am inviting the members of the Board to meet mia in London on Sept. 7.. Some of them are on the Continent and others in the North of Scotland, but we wish to ex- pedite matters as much as possible. The first duty of the Board, in my opinion, will be to appoint a com- mittee of expert technical advisers, who will visit different courses where the Totalisator is in opera- tion, inspect other inventions and report to the Board."

I should be an optimist If I anti- cipated on an English racecourse before the flat-racing season opens in March. On the other hand

the Control Board, under the Act, has power to work the pari-mutuel on approved race-courses: І вес no reason why this system should not be worked in the meantime.

Large Expenditure

Under the Act the Board can either operate the Totalisators themselves or relegate them to authorised persons. That is a matter of fine policy to be decided by the Board: The erection of Totaliaators will, of course, involve the expenditure of a very large sum of money, but the Board has been given wide powers as to the means of raising it.

Brigadier-General Sir Loftus Bates, who represents the Race- course, Association on the Board, said: "I expect the Totalisator machinus will be in full work at the beginning of the flat-racing season:

see no reason why the pari-mutuel should not be in action this winter| for the National Hunt meeting."
