STORY OF MANY CHEQUES

Prosecution Alleges Yeo Used Six Names

GOVT. CLERK GIVES EVIDENCE

An interesting handwriting test was made at the suggestion of Mr. C. A. S. Russ, defending, at the resumed hearing of the Trea- sury fraud case against Carvalho Yeo this morning.

According to the prosecution, prisoner had used six different names-Carvalho Yeo, A. K. D'Almada, Yeung Tak, Chan Man-wai, Yeung Tak-lee and Y. K. Tsim.

The first witness called this morning was Wong Woon-nam, of the 6th floor, China Building. He said that he was in charge of the office of the Tang Tak Land Investment Co. on that floor. Mr. Leung Kwan-ting was the principal tenant of the floor and witness was his agent for the letting of premises and collecting rents.

RENTING AN OFFICE

Witness saw the prisoner for the first time on September 1, 1927, when he called at witness' office and introduced himself "as Yeung Tak. Prisoner wanted to rent an office. He said that his business was that of a building contractor

since August, 1920, and, to the best of his recollection, the Treasury had never drawn cheques in favour of the three firms named on the three cheques handed to the witness by Mr. Hazelrigg. Witness also said that he had never prepared a cheque

and the name of the firm was given by prisoner as the Min Tak Co. He for the sum of $73,785.64. further stated that he was then trad- ing in Yaumati, but was about to move over to Hong Kong.

in favour of the Sang Cheung Co.

Proceeding, witness aald that pri- soner told him that he wanted an office in Hong Kong to Interview people in the course of business and to receive correspondence. A room was let to the prisoner, and he took possession of it on. September 5, 1927, moving in some tables and chairs. A youth of between 15 and 17 years of age was the only em- ployee of the firm that the witness know of..

was occupied by the prisoner.

No Record

Witness kept the Cash Book and had no record of payments made by Cheque Register at the Treasury and

the three cheques forming the sub- ject of the charges against prison- er, and the one drawn in favour of the Sang Cheung, Co.

The first the witness saw or heard of the amounts on the three cheques the prisoner was charged with forg- ing was about January 18, 1928. The witness came to notice those figures
