THE CHINA MAIL,
INVISIBLE RAY
SECRET EXPERIMENTS AT
W
SEA
A NEW DISCOVERY.
I am in a position to announce, states a Southampton correspondent, that an experiment has те cently been carried out aff Nantucket with a new Invisible ray, which in the future is likely to play a most important part in securing greater safety at sea.
This new discovery increases by twenty times the distance which can be seen with the human eye, and must therefore prove of vast Import- ance from a seafarer's point of view..
The ray is equally efficient day and night, and it has the additional advantage of retaining its powers of observation in fog. Thus, if it is possible to see 100 yards in fog or haze, the distance will become 2,000 yards, or over one mile, by using the ray.
Its une will not, of course, in- crease the visibility on the horizon,! for that is dependent upon the curvature of the earth's surface. but its use in cases of bad visibility must, without doubt, be far-reach- ing.
The invention, which is a British one. is.. I understand, worked some what similarly to television, and the image "picked out" by the ray is recorded on the ship's bridge on a sort of mirror.
British capital has a controlling Interest in the invention, which is expected to be perfected in the near future.
In speaking of, the invention at the luncheon meeting of the South- ampton Master Mariners' Club, Mr. J. A. Macdonald,, first officer of the. Cunarder "Aquitania," said he un- derstood that the ray was to be used by the two new big German liners, while it was rumoured that the new White Star mammoth ship would be similarly equipped.-"Journal Commerce."
