On demand pressed natonishment when some- body referred to his "driving mushia." He said that he had [never heard of such a club. His drivers and frons and mashies he knew, but a driving mashlet Would people next be talking about a driving putter?

I suspect he must have been a staid disciple of the old school, entirely out of sympathy with the modern Jargon of the game and the up-to-date nomenclature of the golfer's outfit.

Certainly the names of clubs have lost a good deal of their old simplicity of meaning, while the rapidly growing principle of allot- ting numbera to a range of frons is about as soulless as the applica- tion of a similar means of distinc tion to a crowd of convicts.

The "driving mashie" is now a club of long standing. It began to assert itself na a first-cousin to the driving iron at the time when the old-fashioned cleek-the pro- genitor of this particular genius- was going out of fashion. That was 15 or 20 years ago. Neverthe- less, "driving mashie" is a poor example of a tille derived by de- scent. It is hopelessly mongrel.
