THE RECENT REFUSAL OF
CLEARANCES, -
MEETING HELD.
SHIPPING
SECTION
As the result of a survey of in- land waters quite a number of Chinese steamers were recently held up by the local authorities. The condition of these vessels were considered to be unsatisfactory and dangerous to the crews.
It consequence, several of these ships held up have since gone into dock for overhaul while others,, in view of the depression of trade are hesitating.
A meeting was held at Hung Fa Restaurant and practically all the local Chinese were represented...
A resolution was adopted where- by a legal adviser would be instruct- ed to discuss the legal points in volved.
The meeting decided that each
vessel should contribute $100 for future expenses, and also decided to appeal to the two Chinese represen- tatives on the Council and write to the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce for their assistance,

HUMBER SHIPPING DUES.
The Humber Conservancy Board has approved a recommendation of the Finance Committee that July 31 the rates of shipping, dues be fur. ther reduced from 25 per cent. to 30 per cent. below their statutory maxima. This recommendation fol- lowed upon the report of the secret- ary on the Board's financial posi tion, which was to the effect that the working of the revenue account for the year ended 31 May last showed a surplus of normal income over normal expenditure of £8,557, and that for the year ending on the 31 May next-it is estimated that the surplus will be £7,795.
While on a voyage from Hong Kong to Canton, the boatswain of the 8.5. "Sinklang", accidentally discovered in kerosene tins four revolvers and 400 rounds of am- munition. According to a report made by the master of the vessel yesterday, the kerosene tins were, stowed on deck and were re- garded as passenger'a luggage. No arrests have been made.
