There was great excitement and commotion on the water-front Hoon after noon. to-day, when the Hong Kong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Company's s.s. "Sui Tul" (Capt. Matthews) was observed
to be on fire.
The outbreak occurred about a quarter of an hour after the vessel had safely berthed alongside her wharf, and the passengers had had just sufficient time to get ashore before the alarm was raised.
The "Sui Tai" berthed at 11:50 on her arrival from Macao, with the usual complement of passengers and general cargo. The flames were discovered at the stern at about 12.05 p.m.
A BADLY BURNT SHIP.
How the first started is at pre- sent not ascertainable, but one in- formant working on the "Sul Tal" said that there were some cans of petrol at the stern, and thinks that these suddenly blazed up as the result of a carelessly thrown cigar- elte end or lighted match.
The flames spread quickly by means of a canvas screen erected round the ship's stern. The canvas was swallowed up by the flames in
a few moments, and the danes
