"For one of His Holy Disciples to walk with her," she asked for each by name, but found All had fed and forsaken him from fear of the Jews."

The document supports the be lief of the Ethiople Church that it was Herod and not Pilate who was responsible for the Crucifixion of Christ. It states that the heads of the Jews appealed to Herod for power to crucify Him, as they feared He would be snatched from their hands, "on the advice of Pilate," who "with a great number of people loved Josua,"

The author states that Pilate.and his wife "Loved Jesus like their own soul," and that Pilate only ordered the fogging because he believed it would save Jesus from death.

The Jews had promised to release Him if Pilate would "chastise" Him. After the Crucifixion Pilate rebuked the centurion and the High Priest, and, realizing that the High Priest was still lying to him, he "rose from his chair scourged him. with a rough whip" and afterwards sent: him to prison.

Sir Ernest turned to the women jurors, and added: "If you do not wish to do your duty as citi- zens I will release you. Do you desire to be released?"

A woman juror: We all do. The Recorder: Very well, then, you shall be released, but I think your decision is deplorable.

The three women then left the box, and three other jurors—two women and a man-took their places.

Sir Ernest asked the women if they had any objection to doing their duty as citizens. ·

"No, my lord," replied one. "I have no objection whatever to doing my duty as a citizen, if the men of the jury do not object and think it will prevent them from having open discussion."

Sir Ernest: I do not think the men members of the jury will feel any unpleasantness. If the charges in the case were with regard to giris, I should not give you women any option. If Parlia ment says you are to do your duty you must do it. I should have |thought this was a case where women could be of the greatest Assistance. Women have as much knowledge as men, whether children are telling the truth— perhaps more. One of the com- forts of having women on a jury when children are concerned is that two points of view Are brought to bear on the case.

"OVERLAND CHINA MAIL" ILLUSTRATED.

CHINA NEWS, LOCAL NEWS

AND ALL THE NEWS

SEND IT HOME!

Much of interest to residents, to those on leave or who have gone away, and to those connected by ties of friendship or business with Hong Kong will be found in this work's "Overland China Mail," the only illustrated weekly summary of "local" and "China" news published in the Colony.

The current issue of the "Overland" tells what is being done in the various camps in China. The unusually large number of cases at the Criminal Sessions is covered in a non- routine manner, the reports being written to convey the pathos and the humour of the Courts. Naval arrivals and Service occurrences are noted, as are the departure of leading residents, the visit of Miss Maude Royden (the farnous preacher on her world tour), and the presence of a shark in the harbour. Special articles and features are included at is always the case.

Following the signing of the Nanking Agreement, the British "Shaforce" detachment has been withdrawn from Nanking as another friendly gesture--and the British Consul- General has gone back there. Such events are bound to be given considerable prominence in the Home papers. In order to let people know what is happening, send them a copy of the "Overland" and thereby save the laborious job of writing a long letter.
