The "Cap Lay carried 260 passengers, most of whom were saved, but at least 100 Annamite soldiers, who were being repatriated, were drowned, together with members of the crew. Sur vivors tell gripping stories of their experiences when the typhoon piled the liner, of nearly 9,000 tons, on a sheer rock. Efforts to scram- ble ashore and climb the slippery side of the rock while the typhoon howled and blew around, and the ship slowly sank, make up one of the most harrowing stories of ship- wrecks in the Far East. Captain Benteu, master of the ship, was one of the survivors who reached Hui- phong, where he gave an official report of the wreck.

he was able to keep in wireless com.
