The Export Steamship Corpor- ! ation of Now York have submitted to the U.S. Shipping Board the first plans of ships to be built in accordance with the terms of the Merchant Marine Act, recently signed by the Pre- sident. The plans must be ap proved by the Navy Department before action may be taken by the Shipping Board toward financing their construction as provided by the law which increased the Loan Construction Fund up to £50,000,- 000 and allowed loans up to 75 per cent. of the cost of construction, with interest at the current rate The paid by the U.S. Treasury. Export Steamship Corporation contemplates building four steamers slightly in excess 8.000 tons gross, 450ft. in length, with refrigerated space for about 450 tons of cargo. The machin- ery would consist of three tur- Lines with single reduction gear developing 6,300 s.h.p. under ser- vice conditions, giving a speed of 14 knots. There would be four water-tube boilers working at 325 lbs pressure. Accommodation is provided for 100 passengers,
