2. The anchor lies in the jungle about 220 yards almost due North from the point at the S.W. corner of the island. It is not easy to find as the jungle here, though not very dense, is composed of young sap- linga and is difficult to see through; it presents no great obstacle to walking, however. About 100 yards from the anchor, nearer the beach, is a large anthill which serves as a guide in finding the way.

The flukes have both been cut off and there are two deep cuta made with some blunt Instrument, about 1 inch deep and inch wide, one Jon the shank near the stock and the other on one of the arms. SHIPPING - ABSTRACT.
The anchor would appear to be held as an object of veneration by the local inhabitants; the ground round is carefully cleared of weeds and the sand smoothed, forming a circle about 12 feet in diameter. Some rice bowls, and a soup plate of European pattern, with betei nuts and articles of native food have been placed near it, evidently in- tended as 'offerings. The spot is marked by somá sticks about 8 feet high, carrying pieces of white calico, set round the circle. Three British young_saga palms appear also to Japanese have been planted round, as no Norwegian others were seen in the neighbour- 'Chinese hood:
