GREAT INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF YOUTH IN LONDON,--The rising generation portray the joy of youth. Mays and girls of thirty eations of the work took part in a great festival of youth held by the League of Nations Union at the Crystal Palace, London, on June 2 before a large crowd of 25,000. RECORD PRICE FOR A PAINTING.-£175,000 paid for Raphael's "Madonna and Child," sold secretly in London. Sir Joseph Duveen, the famous Bond-street art dealer. paid £175,000 to Lady Desborough for · Raphael's picture, Mudonna and Child," the highest price ever paid for a single painting. The picture beara Raphael's signature with the date 1508, and as the canvas measures only 30% inches by 22, the price paid makes its value more than £263 à square inch. "HUSH-HUSI" MOTOR-BOAT TO ATTACK "MAURETANIA'S" RECORD FOR ATLANTIC CROSSING. On the right, Miss M. Br Carstairs at the wheel of "Estelle," one of two motor-boats built secretly for her at Cowes. Towards the end of July she will attempt to cross the Atlantic from Ireland, in less than three days. The boat is to have four engines of 500 h.p., and the speed will average 40 knots per hour.-(Sport and General).

THE HIGHLAND SPIRIT IN LONDON -A great sports gathering of Scottish schools and regiments was held at the Duke of York's headquarters, Chelsea, London, in aid of Scottish charities here. The Duke of Atholl is shown taking great inter- est in the Royal Caledonian School boys who excited admiration in their striking national costume.-(Sport and General).

CHINESE USED IN INDIAN EMPIRE GARDEN PARTY'S PRO- GRAMME held at Ranelagh Club on June 27. The proceeds were given to Earl Haig's Fund and the London Children's Fresh Air Fund. Here in the frontispiece of the programme with inscriptions in some of the languages spoken in the Indian Empire. Four Chinese characters occupy one of the spaces in the middle circle, reading "the Republic of China." (Sport and General).

ANNUAL WHITSUNTIDE TRIAL FOR THE DUNMOW FLITCH AT ILFORD, ESSEX, ON MAY 28. Couples who aver that they have lived in amity for a year and one day com pete in the Court for a "flitch", or side of bacon. The court is carried on in truly judicial style, the couples termed plaintiffs, being put into the witness box, and interrogated by counsel for "flitch" end c'aimants. The jury is composed of bachelors and e maidens, while the "judge" was the well-known comedian, Mr. Charles Austin. Mr. and Mrs. Cook were the winners.--(Sport and General).
