SHIP SCUTTLING.

A PLOT THAT FAILED.

MAN CONFESSES,

Paris, May 6.

THE CHINA MAIL,

A prominent Marseilles man, M. Angelyin, has confessed to an attempt to defraud an insurance company of £40,000 by scuttling the steamship "Vinicolo," which he had bought for the purpose.

Angelvin made his confession after two-days', gruelling examin- ation by the Magistrate.

The "Vinicolo" sank off Saint Raphael, on the Riviera, shortly after leaving Marseilles for Greece, but the insurance com pany refused to settle the £40,000 claim.

....

Angelvin declares that he plan. ned the fraud with accomplices, including the captain and mate, and says he was ruined because he was forced to pay his accom- plices their share, but. failed to get the insurance money.

He admits that the cargo, which was insured for £13,000, was worth only £25.

Other arrests are expected in the case.
