HIGHER DUTIES ON IRON

AND STEEL?

The Swedish Board of Commerce is obtaining the view of the various Interested parties concerning re commendations made by an expert Iron and steel committee in favour of an increase in the, Import duties on certain iron and steel products. Among others, the Shipbuilding Industry Association bas presented to the board a statement represent- ing the opinions of this particular Industry. While supporting the suggested higher. duties, the as- sociation does so subject to the State simplifying the prevailing regulations respecting the refund. of Customs duties, which are stated to be applied in a too limited and formal manner.

The association at the outset disputes the assertion of the expert committee that the proposed in- erease in the duties, on the whole, would not affect the shipbuilding industry. This is by no means the case, as the industry also 'con- sumes Swedish material to a large extent.
