GOOD MUSIC?
WHAT IS IT? A FASCINATING PROBLEM.
THE CHARLESTON.
[By Basil Maine, in the London "Morning Post."]
Music has Bever been more wide- ly appreciated than it is now.. The word "appreciation," however, must be qualified. It is too often aesumed that because music is in the air, in the literal sense of the phrase, the community at large is entitled to claim that desirable virtue which is known as "being musical." The virtue, if such it is, has been not so much attained as thrust upon us. Clearly it is not the result of a sudden desire springing from the Heart of the Great Public.
That strange organ has been ao lethargic in response to musical stimulus in the past that its fever- ish pulsing at the present time points to some artificial cause. Yet it would be wrong to ignore this activity. There is a genuine de sire on the part of many people to appraise music at its proper value. And those who have undertaken to help the inquirers are constantly meeting with difficulties.
Good Art,
purpose that is served will deter mine the position in the class.

So, then, in so far as a Charles- tòn tune achieves its purpose, namely, to incite people to dance the Charleston, it is a good Char- leston-tune. But it must full further conditions before we can assign to it the quality of quper- lative goodness.

Brought together exclusively by invitation, the house was represen tative of the country's highest die- tinction in official service, in law and learning, in the musical, literary, graphic, and plastic arts, in finance, Industry and commerce, and of course, in the drama.
