SIR LAURENCE PHILIPPS.
London. That unemployment in a modern nation was a sign of health and progress, that a lot of old tramp tonnage should be broken up for the beneft of the whole shipping industry, and that coat-burning tramp ships were better than motor vessels were some of the opinions presented by Sir Laurence Philipps, Bart., přesiding over the seventh annual meeting of the United British Steamship Co., Ltd.
PENINSULAR & ORIENTAL FORTNIGHTLY DIRECT ROYAL MAIL STEAMERS. (Under Contract with H.M. Government.)
Sir Laurence said that the company had always avoided the purchase of new vessels as far as steamers in the world at the pre- possible. There were too many
acnt time, but the fact was that there were not any of the type of steamers that the company want- ed to buy. There were lots of ob- solete vessels which could not compete with modern tonnage. He only wished other owners would realise that, and break them up as soon as possible. If they did so they would benefit the whole shipping trade. As they could not buy the type of ship they wanted they were obliged to order new ones to be built. Again, they had gone into the question of oil or coal, and had arrived at the definile conclusion that for May! Marseilles, London, Antwerp & Hull. English tramp vessels the coal burning steamer could compete M'lles, L'don, A'werp, R'dam & I'burg with any other boat afloat. In Straits, Colombo, Bombay & Karachi. fact, they were confident that Bombay, Marseilles & London,
they could even make more money Straits, Colombo & Dombay,
