Given one that is playing in a normal state, the first-class golf- er should always be able to return a respectable score. He is seldom called upon to play a stroke of a type that he is not thoroughly familiar with and he is seldom, if ever called upon to play a stroke which he knows is beyond his capabilities. Why, then, does he make so many false shots when nothing more than straight- forward ones are required?

The difference is puzzling. There is no change in the game. The good shot on the home course is the same good shot that is de- manded in the tournament. change must be in the player himself, in his mental outlook on the game. The power of thought is tremendous. far greater than is generally imagined, and it is only by thinking the right thing of yourself that you are likely to do the right thing. To get the iden into your head that you are going to make a mess of a stroke, is the quickest and most certain way of doing so.
Compare the scores on the day before a competition, when the men are at practice, to those re- turned in the actual test. The difference expresses the player's mental attitude. The straight- forward shot of yesterday be comes exceedingly, difficult to- day. The bunkers look bigger and more inviting, and the yard putt, which yesterday he knew he could not miss, is a very tricky one. The line is much harder to. find, and in searching for it, you will probably find one that really only exists in your imagination:
